Welcome!A message from your Chair and Committee Secretary
After the excitement of BSG LIVE’25, we hope you have all had a restful summer.
The committee have been working on several projects across the multi-disciplinary team, some of which will be concluded over the next few weeks. We hope to share the progress we are making with developing a national IBD endoscopy framework and intestinal bowel ultrasound programme in the coming months.
For now, congratulations to you all for engaging with all of the requests for feedback on surveys, projects and research activities.

We have held adult and paediatric workshops with Prof Alison Leary as part of a review of the nursing workforce standards to create optimal caseload numbers.
These will be followed by a wider survey, with the intention of involving IBD nurses from across the UK.
We are working with the IBD UK Board to publish journal articles on both the IBD UK survey data and the updated IBD Standards. With this in mind, the updated IBD Standards are expected to be published early 2026. We have been very pleased with the update process, with one of our lived experience representatives providing the following feedback: “I think the reviewed Standards are excellent and set a realistic, relevant, measurable and yet appropriately aspirational bar, to services to deliver IBD care to better meet patient priorities and needs.”
The pilots for the Lower GI Pathway will be underway soon, with teams in Edinburgh and Portadown NI very engaged. We are holding joint meetings to share learning and look forward to the outcomes of both pilots.

The UK IBD community has developed a number of Key Performance Indictors (KPIs) over recent years with the aim of allowing hospital services to measure, benchmark and improve key aspects of their service provision to IBD patients.
The KPIs are:
- Time to diagnosis defined as date of referral to date of first clinical diagnosis of IBD made. This aligns closely with patient priorities and there is clear evidence of delayed diagnosis leading to worse patient outcomes.
- Time from diagnosis to treatment defined as date of diagnosis to date of treatment. This is a UK IBD standard and has been associated with much better outcomes in early treatment as shown by the PROFILE trial.
- Number of steroid courses for existing patients with IBD during the last 12 months prior to clinic review. Steroid excess is associated with poor care and that steroid exposure can be reduced by Quality Improvement measures.
- Completion of pre-biologic screening checks prior to advanced medication commencement and follow up at 3 and 12 months to assess efficacy and safety.
The BSG is now organising and funding a pilot study across the UK for 10-12 sites to test collecting audit information in relation to these KPIs and instigating improvements where required. Our Open Call for pilot sites has now closed and we will now be working with the chosen sites to support them with data collection across the four KPIs in order to identify areas for improvement.
