IBD Update

Summer 2026

Welcome!

A message from your Chair and Committee Secretary

Shahida Din

Committee Chair

Gareth Parkes

Committee Secretary

We hope you are all enjoying the summer. We wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone for coming and supporting BSG LIVE’26 in Liverpool. There was record attendance and six packed IBD sessions with fantastic feedback on the focused clinical sessions. This year we had several collaborative sessions with the small bowel and primary care teams. Please do catch up with content on demand here which will remain open until 1st March 2027.

We have been very fortunate to have specialist pharmacist and IBD nurse support in the committee and wanted to thank Fiona Rees and Wendi Harrison for their time on the committee. A much-anticipated practical guide for biologics and targeted small molecule therapy prescribing and management of Infusion clinics in IBD has been completed and will be available soon.

We warmly welcomed our new committee members IBD Nurse Specialist Angus Crawford, Dr Alenka Brooks, Dr Hannah Gordon, Dr Chronis Pavlidis and Specialist Pharmacist Jon Kwok.

As a first, we have also co-opted national representatives from the devolved nations Dr Claire Tibatts (Welsh Association of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy), Dr Stephen Boyle (Ulster Society of Gastroenterology) and Dr John Paul Seenan (Scottish Society of Gastroenterology) and will continue working with the societies to support and improve IBD care ensuring that all 4 devolved nations have representation.

Workstream Updates

Intestinal bowel ultrasound was included in EndoVillage for a second year and was sold out - this will be a regular feature now. Thank you to Dr William Blad, Dr Nigel Grunshaw, Dr Shanika de Silva, Specialist IBD Nurse Hayley Owen and Dr Nik Plevris IUS trainers, who coordinated and delivered these sessions.

We have made progress with agreeing a proposal to develop a sustainable programme for IBUS in the UK, a collaboration with BSG-BSGAR-IBUS, more details to follow with planning for a second iBUS Module 1 course and XP radiology course early next year. Many thanks to current and past IBUS presidents, Dr Kerri Novak and Dr Krisztina Gecse, for their support.

Events

On World IBD Day on 19 May 2026, we had patient representative Mr Ian Sinclair share his experiences on sexual health in the next session of IBD Question Time supported by Dr Nighat Arif, Mr Phil Tozer, IBD Nurse Rachel Campbell and Professor Jimmy Limdi – a topic that needs more attention. You can watch the recording HERE.

We have hosted two of the IBD endoscopy disease activity webinars. The first with Professors Simon Travis and Vipul Jairath on ulcerative colitis and Professor Rachel Cooney and Dr Sash Honap on Crohn’s disease. The third webinar on 21st Sept is focused on IBD surveillance, presented by Professor Pradeep Bhandari and Dr Ana Wilson - book HERE.

Professor Chris Lamb and Dr Ally Speight also hosted an excellent webinar on the extra-manifestations on IBD – focus on skin and joints. Watch the webinar recording HERE.

Surveys

The TOTAL-CD trial team are in the last stages of designing the first multi arm, multistage trial for Crohn’s disease and would appreciate your help in deriving a consensus on the minimal clinical important differences we use to assess and measure safety and efficacy of advanced therapies in CD. Survey.

A UK Survey to assess IBD Therapy, Access, Pathways and Selection.

Do you believe there is equal access to advanced therapy across the UK?  In order to improve access we invite all hospitals to participate in this survey.
