IBD Update

July 2025

Welcome and thank you! - a message from your Chair and Committee Secretary

We wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone for engaging with IBD at BSG LIVE‘25. There was record attendance and six packed IBD sessions plus the IBD content in the CSSC session with the launch of the guidelines on IBD in adults and the guidelines on colorectal surveillance in IBD.

Many congratulations to Professors Gordon Moran, Morris Gordon and James East for their innovation, dedication and enthusiasm in leading the Guidelines.

This was a huge endeavour with over 100 colleagues and patients working together to modernise guideline development. We are hugely indebted to everyone who participated in this mammoth effort to bring the guidelines to fruition. The Delphi voting sessions were successful because of all the enthusiastic vigorous debates - again this would not have been possible without your involvement. A huge congratulations to everyone.

Watch this space for the upcoming IBD guidelines interview video filmed at BSG LIVE'25 in a fireside chat format. In case you missed it, last year's BSG LIVE'24 interview video focusing on optimising the monitoring strategies in IBD is out now.

Even late on Thursday there were 200-300 people listening to a fascinating session on Microscopic colitis, Checkpoint induced -colitis and acute severe ulcerative colitis which was amazing to see! What was particularly lovely to see was the sense of camaraderie and friendship across the wider UK IBD team with trainees (with amazing posters and oral presentations), Consultants, IBD nurses, dieticians, pharmacists, scientists and surgeons all coming together as speakers or audience. What a wonderful team we have! For us, that unity highlights the potential skills, knowledge and determination we can harness to achieve amazing work in improving the care of patients with IBD in the UK both from a clinical and research perspective.

News from ECCO

Calling all IBD Trainees!

The 24th annual IBD Intensive Course for Trainees will take place in Stockholm on Wednesday 18th February 2026, the first day of the 21st ECCO Congress. Access the Preliminary Programme here.

This annual Course is a 1-day event, taking place prior to the ECCO Congress and an excellent educational opportunity. The course offers an excellent opportunity for young clinicians and researchers to meet colleagues from many European countries with different standards of medicine and establish a network for future collaboration.

It was initiated in 2003 with the aim of providing advanced fellows and junior faculty in gastroenterology with a multidisciplinary broad base of knowledge in IBD. Participation is by invitation only by Member Societies. The BSG may send three nominees.

To be considered, you need to be a BSG member in good standing and in a UK Training Programme.

Nominations are now open and must be received by the BSG before the deadline of midnight on 27th July 2025. You will also need to upload your CV and a 500-word statement of intent. The outcome of applications will be advised in early September 2025.

New PSP in Endoscopy Research

We are supporting a James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership in Endoscopy to identify the top 10 future research priorities. This partnership is also supported by Guts UK and Crohn’s & Colitis UK.  The partnership has developed a short survey which they are inviting healthcare professionals, patients, carers and family members who have experience of endoscopy to complete. This survey covers upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy/gastroscopy, endoscopy of the pancreas and liver, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy.

To make a difference in the future of endoscopy research, please complete the survey which will take less than 5 minutes.

Quality Improvement Work

Despite significant advances in medical and surgical aspects of IBD care, the quality of IBD provision in the UK remains poor. Patients’ surveys and self-reported service parameters have been the cornerstone of the IBD UK benchmarking efforts with seminal reports in 2021 and 2024.

The BSG IBD Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were agreed upon in a delphi process involving key stakeholders and were published in 2023. The BSG IBD committee believe that the BSG IBD KPIs complement guidelines, standards and surveys.

We are delighted that a BSG-funded project will aim to demonstrate that the BSG IBD KPIs are implementable and a useful tool to facilitate quality improvement involving 10-12 IBD sites collecting BSG IBD KPIs with expert QI facilitator-led sessions focusing on implementation of data collection and points learned for service design improvement. Further updates will be made available as the project progresses.

Individual Research Initiatives

Early Bowel Resection for terminal Ileal Crohn’s disease (E-BRIC)

The aim is to understand how healthcare professionals might weigh up selected factors and pros and cons of treatment when choosing between medical therapy (anti-TNF therapy) and an operation for patients with Crohn’s disease affecting the terminal ileum or ileocaecum in isolation.

This questionnaire is open to any gastro/colorectal consultant with any IBD experience, IBD nurses and post-CCT fellows in gastroenterology/colorectal surgery.  It takes between 10 and 15 minutes to complete.

Transgender Patients with IBD

This survey investigates healthcare provider confidence with regards to managing patients with minority gender identities and IBD. Please help us understand how we can provide better care for everyone.

Lancet Global Commision on IBD

IBD is now a global disease with global challenges and opportunities. Prof Shaji Sebastian (Hull) and Dr Gillian Watermeyer (Cape Town) are leading a Lancet Global Commision on IBD. This brings together commissioners who are IBD leaders from across the world to create a Lancet commission document to influence research, funding and policy to develop global approaches to IBD and reduce health inequalities globally .

They have a global preparedness survey to support this work to assess the challenges, resource gaps and strategies for IBD care worldwide. The global survey is intended for all healthcare professionals (Gastroenterologists, IBD and stoma nurses, Dieticians, surgeons etc) who manage patients with IBD. Please can UK IBD colleagues complete the survey here so that we can contribute to the global IBD challenges.

IBD-TAPAS (IBD Therapy Access Pathways and Selection)

We believe that IBD patients should have equal access to advanced therapy, independent from where they live. To achieve this, we need to understand the current access that clinicians have to advanced therapies, processes for obtaining medications for their patients and approvals in place. Please complete this survey which will help us identify inequity between regions.

Update on the Lower GI Pathway Pilot

We have confirmed the two sites for the pilot ‘early adopter programmes’. These will be taking place in Edinburgh in Scotland and Portadown in Northern Ireland.

These offer the opportunity to look at a large number of urban GP practices in Scotland, versus a rural GP practice in Northern Ireland. The two project teams will meet together at the start, middle and end of the pilots to share learnings. The pilots will be commencing in autumn 2025 and will run for twelve months.
